The press here will be silent. As of August 1st The News-Star will be printed in Shreveport. These last few stacks of paper disapear everyday as a reminder.

Muffler Shop:

So I looking for a furniture store that someone told me about and I passed a muffler shop on Washington St. I saw the open bays and all the pipes hanging down, pulled a U-turn and walked up to the guy standing outside. I, camera in hand, asked him if it was alright to take a picture and he just laughed and asked what trouble I was having with my car. I give him a puzzled look and told him Im serious and he directs me to the owner of the shop. Reluctant at first, he agreed, but not to face the camera… Im not really happy with the result… shrug…should have made him face the other direction. But thanks to Kevin and his cool wall o’ exhaust pipes

A New Role:

A week ago, I was on the set of a local movie for 36 hours. I was a featured extra playing a photographer while also actually documenting the filming for my job. This was a new experience for me, being a “set” photographer. Since I did not have any specialized equiptment, such as a sound blimp (see images here http://tinyurl.com/65bslnj ) I was having to shoot only when the natural sound would cover the sound of my shutter. This was a challenge, because for a lot of the scenes, only the actors were mic’ed, the extras in the background all pantomined and a plan to drop in crowd sound later.

The production team was using a RED camera with Zeiss primes to capture the footage and the quality was outstanding. I found the way they set up scenes and the way they lit the location was especially interesting.

Someone else’s memories:

Still on my decorating kick, I found a really neat idea to use old slides as curtains.

I didnt want to ruin our family slides (obviously) so I started looking around town and on ebay. Results were out of my price range, so I advertised on craigslist (first time) and forgot about it. A few days later, I get an email from someone down in NOLA wanting to get rid of her father’s old slides.

We worked out an inexpensive deal and today I i received over 200 slides in the mail.

I actually missed the package, so I walked down to the post office (about 100 yards) and the lady at the window said the postman was still on his route and then pointed out the window at a side street next to my apartment, telling me that was his truck and to go chase him down if I wanted to.

So today I met my regular mailman, a really nice guy.

Anyways… I separated the slides between Kodachrome, ektachrome and others. I find it facinating to look at other people’s photos. These were taken in the 70’s and 80’s and were old photos of NOLA, Disney World and their family trips (including to the Leaning tower of Pisa.)

Hopefully soon I can make my curtain and maybe a lampshade!
